Sling TV From DISH Network

The highly anticipated over-the-top video service from DISH Network was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Monday. The 12-channel streaming service will be available for just $20 a month, and will include ABC Family, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney Channel, ESPN, Food Network, HGTV, TBS, TNT, and the Travel Channel. You do not need a TV subscription from DISH like some other streaming services; all you need is an Internet connection or a Roku box, Kindle Fire TV or select Smart TVs (not including Apple TV). With a Sling TV subscription, you can watch programming on your tablet, smart phone, computer or TV. However, the single-stream service can only be used on one device at a time. So if you plan on sharing the subscription with a roommate, friend, etc. and one of you wants to watch “Chopped” but the other wants to watch a game on ESPN, one of you is out of luck. Additional programming such as sports, kids and news networks can be added to the basic package for just $5 more a month. Netflix Now Available to DISH Customers

DISH and Netflix have partnered up to bring DISH customers Netflix content via the Hopper™. Effective today, DISH customers will be able to stream Netflix content through the whole-home HD DVR, better known as the Hopper, for the regular fee of $7.99 – $8.99 a month.  The streaming service provides TV shows and movies to online viewers and is now available from a pay-TV provider for the first time. DISH Senior Vice President of Product Management Vivek Kehmka points out that the app integration gives customers easy access to their favorite shows and movies from both DISH and Netflix – all through the Hopper. The service is also anticipated to be added to other DISH devices such as its Joey receivers. The pay-TV arrangement is a first for Netflix and Bill Holmes, global head of business development at Netflix explains the reasoning behind such a partnership as a no brainer; “Many households subscribe to both Netflix and a traditional pay-TV service. The Latest and Greatest from DIRECTV and Sony

The latest innovations in the TV industry comes in the form of movies in 4K from DIRECTV and Internet TV streaming service from Sony. Sony announced that it is launching a cloud-based TV service called Playstation Vue which will give subscribers access to about 75 channels and on demand titles. The cloud feature allows subscribers to save episodes to the cloud for 28 days. Sony will begin testing of a beta version of the service this month to select Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 owners in New York City and will eventually roll out to Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Sony hopes to expand the service to other devices with plans already in the works with Apple for the TV service on the iPad. According to Sony, the platform will be available to the general public in Q1 of 2015. And DIRECTV became the first TV provider to offer 4K programming by delivering select movies on demand to its customers. Movies such as Forrest Gump and Transformers: Age of Extinction are now available to DIRECTV on demand subscribers with prices ranging from $3.99-$15.99 per title (see the entire list of movies below). There is also a $50.00 initial setup fee for the 4K service. What is 4K? 4K provides four times the resolution of 1080p video by doubling the pixel count of full HD video. Time Warner Cable Phone 2 Go App

Time Warner Cable’s Phone 2 Go app launched this week giving customers the ability to forward all of their incoming Home Phone calls, including video calls and text messages, to their smartphone. Time Warner Cable subscribers can download the Phone 2 Go app from the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app also gives you the ability to make outgoing calls and send text messages from your smartphone via your Home Phone account. Here is a list of the app’s features*:
  • Forward incoming Home Phone calls including video calls and text messages to smartphone or tablet
  • Make voice calls and send text messages from mobile devices using a TWC Home Phone account
  • Make and receive video calls with other Phone 2 Go users
  • Access contact lists stored on the phone or tablet device
  • Maintain a list of Favorite Contacts, Recent Calls and Messages
  • Play and manage Voicemail messages
  • Use Call Waiting and 3-Way Calling
  • Take advantage of Home Phone features (Selective Call Blocking, Unconditional Forwarding, Caller ID Blocking, Anonymous Call Rejection, etc.) on all calls
So how does it work? Phone 2 Go supports voice and video calling as well as text messaging from anywhere in the world through the device’s data connection** (cellular or WiFi). It can be used from up to five devices at low-cost home phone rates. Incoming calls will ring simultaneously on all associated Phone 2 Go devices and the home phone. Once one device accepts the call, all others stop ringing and a private conversation begins. *Phone 2 Go does not support 911 emergency services via voice calling or text. Customers acknowledge this during the initial setup. **If the device is using a cellular data connection, subscribers may be charged by their service provider.

FOX AutoHop Challenge Deferred

A federal judge has ruled in favor of DISH in a dispute FOX filed against the AutoHop feature that removes commercials from recorded primetime shows. U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee indicated a tentative decision that DISH isn’t violating copyright law with this feature as it would be considered fair use under the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1984 decision in the Sony Betamax case. The 1984 ruling was in favor of allowing customers to make personal copies of copyrighted programming. Richard Stone, a lawyer for Fox Broadcasting Co. stated at the hearing that, “They created commercial-free video-on-demand because by law they can’t provide commercial-free live TV.” He goes on to say that, “What they’re saying is don’t watch that stinky live stuff.” The argument here is that allowing viewers to watch recorded primetime shows with the ads removed weakens Fox’s business model. It reduces the value of their shows to advertisers and without advertisers, broadcasters wouldn’t make money. DISH also offers Primetime Anytime which is a feature that acts like a DVR and automatically records all primetime programming for an entire night. Going back to allowing customers, not DISH, to make personal copies, DISH argues that it is a feature that the customer has to enable. But Fox is arguing that it violates its contract agreement with DISH that prohibits DISH from offering Fox content on video-on-demand. This is something that U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee says may be a breach of contract due to the copying functions of Primetime Anytime. Gee also indicated that she was leaning in favor of Fox when it came to DISH Anywhere which allows customers to access live streams of broadcast programming from their mobile device. This relates to the Supreme Court decision back in June that Aereo was infringing on copyrights when it offered streams of broadcast programming via a system of remote antennas.
